I just joined the Sunrise Club at the end of 2011 and have never done a duathlon or triathlon. I have to say, what a great group! The officers, the members, the volunteers and the individuals and businesses that sponsor and give time are amazing to me. It gives beginners like me a chance to learn and benefit from the experience of some super athletes and even nicer people.
I went to the walk through the day before and Daniel Anderson kept talking about “the 5 disciplines”. I’ve never been big on math but I couldn’t figure out how swim, bike and run (3) added up to 5. Then he said the 2 transitions were the other 2 areas we needed to work on. Great advice that was reinforced by Eric Sullivan! Last night I laid out my stuff and figured what I’d put on and in what order. I walked through this morning a few times because at the last two Du’s I jacked up the transitions by running to the wrong rack. Having said that, I took time to put socks on in T1 since I haven’t ridden or run without. Lesson learned – Don’t do that again! The bike was okay for me but I thought I was going to get dinged by the ref once for passing too slowly. My T2 was much better (35 seconds) and it was a good thing because I nearly lost my placing at the end of the run.
I looked at the results scrolling across the computer and was shocked to see I finished 2nd in my age group with 1:03 and change. Of course I was shocked again when I saw 1st place finished in just 48 minutes! Wow really, I mean are you kidding me! Curb stomped by 15 minutes. I guess I better train some more. But I’m not giving back my prized Sunrise Tri Club water bottle . Great time and look forward to Sunrise Tri #2.
