Hi to all:
Sorry to report that Steve died Sunday morning (10/20/13). He was diagnosed with
cancer in early July and battled it with aggressive chemo therapy since
then. I don't have details of the why or how of his sudden turn for the
worse. By all accounts, he was abused by the chemo but it was doing its job
and the tumor was shrinking.
There will be a memorial service, however, the date is not set.
Devastating news like that is hard to keep bottled up and many of you have
known for a few days and were perhaps puzzled by the absence of a posting.
The family was understandably shaken with his sudden reversal and death and
asked that there be no mass emails of the news for a bit while they got
their feet under them. Best guess is that the level of privacy they
maintained during Steve's battle with cancer is still in place and an
outpouring of phone calls and visits is not what the family is looking for.
A brief notice was placed on the Red River Runner's Facebook page earlier
today after word came from the family that they were ready for Steve's
extended endurance sport family to know of his death. Steve was the
president of Red River Runners and active in the Tri-club and, of course,
our club.
He is already greatly missed.
A riding memory: Steve and I were midpack when the group in front of us
continued to accelerate. What to do? Close the gap and grind or let it go
and enjoy the day? In those few seconds, I heard Steve singing to the tune
of Let it Snow. "Let them go, let the go, let them go." The right decision
and we enjoyed the day.
It's a lot harder to let him go.
Roger
