My full sleeve wetsuit should be delivered tomorrow, and I am wondering how soon can a person start open water swimming around here? At cypress for example, or open to suggestions of somewhere else, also. This is for the "average" person, not the polar bear type! Thx!

Does anybody set up a open water swim group? Cwebb, let me know when you plan on doing your swims, if nothing else it will give you another person there in case something happens. Plus we can work on drafting techniques and swimming next to people. I'm looking to get atleast 1 open water swim in a week once the water temp rises

I am not sure how soon most start swimming. I know that the bass spawn is in mid swing right now (knowledge from past hobby) so that should put the water temps about 55-60 ish right now. I would say early april at the earliest probably. Just a guess but I am not completely sure.
We generally have an open water skills clinic in July ish time frame that is put on by Janet Martin. Awesome event!

I would think that tolerance for cold/cool water is a very individual thing. Depending on the body of water, depth, spring feed and other factors, you would probably be comfortable now in a wet suit. It would be important to wear a cap or two to keep your head warm. And of course never swim by yourself, always have someone that can help if you should get into trouble

Thank you Janet! I hadn't even thought about the whole swim cap thing! Makes sense though! I am needing to get in some open water time soon so we shall see!

If I remember correctly, we had several members start swimming in March out at Cypress the past few years.

Thx. Yeah, it was fine. I have been out at cypress twice now and it was fine with a wetsuit. I had sleeves, Cassie swam with a sleeveless. And I am cold natured so I would think it would be ok for anybody. There were kids in with no wetsuit!

you said the key word, kids. ;D We all did things as kids that we think back to now as questionable...
