Yeah, it's happening! I'm finally getting around to this thing. Get off my back, ya bums.
Dates (all on Wednesdays):
May 9
May 23
June 6
June 20
(skipping July 4th)
July 11
July 25
Time: 6:45 pm (going 15 minutes later than usual...this is when the first rider will be sent off). Riders are sent off at 30 seconds intervals.
Distance: 7.35 miles, out and back
Place: Intersection of Highway 175 and Ellerbe Road at the bridge. DO NOT park on the roads, no straddling the shoulder/road. Get completely off the roads. Maybe park elsewhere (White Springs Road?) and ride to the start as your warmup.
Open to Anyone: Legal disclaimer (apologies to Kenny Bellau): This is a spontaneous, self run group ride, with no leader, no prize money, no promoter, no entry fee, no one responsible, on open roads, therefore you have no one to sue. The course is open to traffic so you got to deal with that and keep your head up and eyes open. The course is as it is. Open to everyone with a bike and a helmet. Please drink responsibly.
History: This is an informal, grassroots time trial series that began over 25 years ago when Tim Fitzgerald was still fast and Jason Weinland had just been born. Except for two years this TT has been on this same course with the same start and finish lines and turnaround spot at Harts Island Road (if you go over the railroad tracks you've gone too far). National 40K Time Trial record holder John Frey has ridden this course. Pro riders and national champions have ridden this course. Why the hell shouldn't you?
You only race against yourself, to get better each time you come out here. But I will list your time with everyone else's so you can see how you stack up. In the end, however, it comes down to how you stack up against that version of you from two weeks before. Can you beat yourself? Are you sure?
Current course records: Mat "Bolt" Davis - 14:57* (29.49 mph) 6/29/11; Louise Smyth - 17:23 (25.37 mph) 5/11/11.
If you have any questions, let me know by emailing me directly. Volunteers are always welcomed. See ya!
Alan
